This resignation only concretes the fact he was taking bribes, and dipping into the Fianna Fail till.
If he was innocent he would have fought tooth and nail to keep power and clear his name.
But the question remains was he pushed into resigning.
Another political scumbag bites the dust. He should have been stripped of all his pensions as well….the crook.
Good to hear! It certainly settles the 2-year running issue on who will be the Irish Leader while Bertie Ahern continue with facing his fate in an almost script written political sleaze episode straight from ‘Law and Order: Criminal Intent’. If it reads like a crime novel, it is one.
Those usually end with the defendant being led from the dock.
I must say, the Central Executive Council of the Soldiers of Destiny Party did a wonderful job of their press handling and timing the announcement as they did. Press releases forwarded to all the major press agencies that, I am sure, were notified earlier that day if not the day before. How else could the Central Executive Council minimise the impact of the reality its members had to face as they read of the anti-corruption Tribunal’s proceedings of the previous week.
By any modern European standards in state politics, the content of the admissions yet to be made to the Irish people and electorate would have demanded a premier’s resignation long ago. But, I suppose, Russia is part of Europe too. Come to think of it, isn’t Moscow a favoured destination for disgraced criminals and ex-Soldiers of Destiny party members?
A great day for Ireland.

Good riddance to a shady character and a slimy politician.
I’m delighted that he’s gone and still has to face the tribunals.
It’s probably great that you have to take down this website too!
all the best
